Databasing
- DBMS
- Database Management System, a program or set of programs which manage the creation, maintenance and use of a database.
- Query
- A query refers to an action taken upon the database, such as a search with a select query.
- Schema
- The structure of the database, the organisation of data.
- Table
- A set of data elements in reference to/organised by the schema.
- Union
- Action taken to join two tables.
Networking
- Access Point
- The point or gateway for different devices to be able to network, commonly refers to a wireless router.
- DHCP
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol used in communicating network settings (such as IP, Gateway and DNS) to end devices.
- DNS
- Domain Name Service, a service used for translating URLs/URIs into network addresses such as IP addresses.
- For example www.google.com translates to 66.102.11.104.
- DMZ
- Demilitarised zone, a physical or logical subnetwork containing services for a larger untrusted network, i.e. the Internet.
- Firewall
- A logical service designed for preventing unwanted interactions between hosts or/and networks.
- Gateway
- A gateway is a system which allows two networks to be able to communicate, commonly through a logical interface.
- IP
- Internet Protocol, the principle protocol used for communicating/packet transmission across a network.
- NAT
- Network Address Translation, effectively a networking hack which allows the ability to translate communication between networks by replacing the IP in the header of packets.
- Modem
- Modulator, demodulator, a device used for modulating analogue signal to encode digital packets onto the signal and visa versa.
- Packet Switching
- Packet switching is a common form of communication, where data which is sent over a network is broken down into smaller packets of a nominal size.
- Private Network
- A private network is an instance of a network which uses a range of addresses which can not be accessed outside of the network without the aid of a NAT. This type of setup (private network + NAT) is commonly used for sharing services on a public network (such as the internet) to multiple devices.
- Port
- A networking port is used to determine the destination of a packet once it reaches its destination. This in turn also enables one computer to use the same networking address for many services.
- Port Forwarding
- Port forwarding or port mapping is an example of NAT, where the use of a port number determines which address is assigned to a packet.
- Router
- A device for relaying packets between devices or networks. Also commonly facilitates networking services such as DHCP, firewall control and logging.
- Switch
- A device mainly for switching/sending packets across on the same network, but level 3 switches are able to exchange packets on different logical networks, providing the medium is the same, such as ethernet VLANs.
- VLAN
- Virtual Local Network, a group of devices which communicate logically irrelevant of their physical location.
System
- CPU
- Central Processing Unit, the portion of the computer dedicated to executing processes.
- Mono
- An opensource international standard framework(headed by Novell) for .Net compliant tools.
- .Net
- Microsoft .Net Framework, a set of tools to enable Microsoft languages (C#) to provide web services.
- OS
- Operating System, software which controls the executing and management of applications as well as provides an interface between the user and hardware.
- RAM
- Random Access Memory, physical memory (integrated chips), used during computer processing to store and access data quickly.
- Swap/Paging
- The transfer of data from a computers main memory to axillary memory, such as using part of the harddrive instead of RAM.
Virtual Worlds
- Aurora-sim
- A 3D simulator server which facilitates a framework for virtual world(s).
- Kokua
- A viewer/client to enable (3D) user interaction with virtual worlds.
- Grid
- <insert micro def here>!--A set or group of sims which share common services, such as inventory.
- Hypergrid
- <insert micro def here>
- Sim
- <insert micro def here>
- Radegast Viewer
- A text based viewer to enable user interaction with virtual worlds.
